Bearmouth Rest Area Proposal

The Bearmouth Rest Area, located along a scenic stretch of Montana’s highways, was envisioned as a refreshing oasis for travelers in need of rest and rejuvenation. This preliminary proposal, developed for the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), focused on creating a comfortable and inviting stop while celebrating the unique history of the site. Although the project was not ultimately selected, the design sought to strike a balance between modern convenience and a connection to the region’s past.

A Creative Approach to Design and Materials

In response to material restrictions, the design emphasized the creative use of block patterning and color, infusing the space with a sense of warmth and visual interest. The proposal aimed to offer travelers a place of respite while subtly reflecting the historic character of the surrounding area on both sides of the highway.

A Restful Experience for Weary Travelers

The Bearmouth Rest Area was envisioned as more than a simple stop—it was designed to provide a welcoming environment where visitors could pause, refresh, and enjoy the tranquil scenery. The proposed rest area would serve as a quiet retreat, embodying the spirit of Montana’s open roads and inviting travelers to take a moment to rest amid the state’s natural beauty.
